Relaxation and Massage Tips for Moms-to-be

There are many wonderful things about being pregnant, but the aches and pains along with the stress can create discomfort. Luckily actions can be taken to diminish the mental and physical strain that can occur during pregnancy. "Massage" is a popular method of relaxtion for many, pregnant or not. It is used to ease stress from various sources. We asked massage therapist and labor doula, Sherri Danzig for a few tips on how massage can help the expectant mom.

Benefits of Pregnancy Massage:

- Alleviates tension in the body caused by stress on ligaments and muscles in the back and the baby's position in your growing abdomen coupled with poor posture

- Provides a source of relaxation and self-care during a time of great physical and emotional stress on the body

Key Pressure Points:

- Every woman has different pressure points depending on how her body changes during pregnancy. For instance, someone whose chest has become heavier may consider the upper back a key area. Past injuries can become pressure points for others.

- The most common pressure point in pregnancy massage is the Sacroiliac (SI) joint, where the lower back and hips connect. This point is also related to the neck and shoulder area, another sensitive spot for pregnant moms.

Items for Your Hospital Bag:

  • Two tennis balls in a sock with a thumb's space between them - This tool can be used to apply to pressure points on the body during labor by mom or her support person.
  • Scented massage oil (Try mom's favorite aromatherapy scent)
  • Non-scented massage oil (Our expert recommends almond oil) - Scented oils may be too strong for mom while she is in labor.
  • Non-electric heat pads (Can be found at the drugstore) - Use these on any tender spots
  • Two gallon-sized Ziploc bags - Fill one with ice and stick it inside the other to create a cold pack for any sensitive areas. The alternate use of heat and cold serves to relieve stress due to contractions and labor pains.
  • Plastic cup - When delivering in a bath tub, use the cup to pour water over the belly and lower back to ease discomfort.
  • Non-tangible relaxation tools - Whether it's music, a book of poems, a favorite story, or a cherished picture or work of art, bring something that can provide internal or external relaxation
